The Scary Secret of Plastic Packaging
According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), 14.5 million tons of plastic containers and packaging were created in 2018 alone.According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), 14.5 million tons of plastic containers and packaging were created in 2018 alone. The fact that you’re part of the Vitamini community means this statistic will probably scare you because you care deeply about the environment and your health. You may be worried about leaving a large carbon footprint, or about contamination of the food you eat.
We are too. For example, we know that environmental oestrogens from plastic can imitate oestrogen in our bodies and in doing so wreak havoc on our hormones and reproductive systems. Meanwhile, plastics manufacturing is responsible for a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Single use plastics from food and other industries is also clogging our landfills and waterways, harming wildlife and entering our food chain.
Whilst it’s becoming increasingly difficult to avoid plastic packaging completely, there are some things we can do to limit its effect on our health and the environment. For example, choosing fresh, homemade and home grown food over packaged means we can avoid plastic packaging completely.
However, in this fast-paced world, convenience is king and it’s hard to imagine a world with no packaging whatsoever. Therefore, the food industry and packaging technology it uses needs to evolve.
More eco-friendly packaging materials and more thought from brands is key. For example, at Vitamini, we are fully committed to reducing our carbon footprint. We make our products in the UK and are constantly reducing the resources is takes to make and ship them.
